January 3, 2005 Letter to Paul Martin, Prime Minister of Canada

Dear Prime Minister Martin,

After listening to all the rhetoric and attacks on Canada about our delayed reaction to the Asian crisis and criticism towards you as Prime Minister, I have come to the conclusion that it would be much better for you as the Prime Minister of Canada to suggest to bring orphaned children (under the age of 12)  from the Asian disaster to Canada to recuperate and to find homes with Asian or Canadian families. You would be the greatest father of a country and look what it would do for election time - for Canadians to look up to a man of character.  Not like our neighbour - the USA President,  who has not yet even made a personal donation to this disaster.  You, of course, are well aware that he could never top this with his one-upmanship behaviour.

This is also, at the same time, a reminder that none of the countries around the world filled their hearts with great compassion for the people in Sudan, who have been dying by the hundreds of thousands. But, then what can you do... it is not a tourist trap.  And then to speak about our own homeless Canadians - where seniors with respiratory conditions are sleeping outside in frigid and wet conditions. Then there are the so many who are out of jobs and have lost their homes. I know it is overwhelming, but mustn't compassion first start at home?   We would not want to become the talk in international circles about the deplorable conditions - third world conditions at that - that exist here.  Within our own borders we have starving children, children in poverty and mothers in despair, whose day-to-day livelihood is nearly impossible to achieve since the food prices, housing, etc. keep rising and are out of reach.

No, this is not criticism. This is just a letter to remind you and all Canadians that spirituality and compassion must exist at home first. Within 40 minutes from the White House people live in shanty towns and are starving. Why is it that even a country like the USA is ready and able to go to war, but within its own borders thousands of people are starving and suffering.  We as Canadians, as peacekeepers of the world, need to be the example of goodness and stable living. You, as the Prime Minister of Canada, have a chance to become the father of the greatest nation called God's Country - Canada.

Let us all behave and live life for peace.

With great respect,

Her Holiness Hehpsehboah A.
